June 2018– Looking for things to do in Austin, Texas this summer? Well, sit back as I go over a few of my favorites. Let me break things down into my four loves; Music, Festivals, Fitness, and Food.
Music. KGSR just kicked off their summer concert series, Blues on the Green. June’s concert features Bob Schneider with Superfonico on the 13th. The show starts at 8:00 PM, so get there early so you can get a good spot. This is a FREE concert series, but you do have to pay to park. You can buy a $15 parking pass online, or you can always take a Lyft or an Uber. You are allowed to bring a cooler with non-alcoholic beverages, blankets, lawn chairs, dogs on a leash & your kids. Things you cannot bring…ALCOHOL. There’s no alcohol allowed on the premises There’s also no smoking. You can’t bring glass or styrofoam. There will be vendors selling food and beverages so you don’t need to lug a cooler. You can find out more information on KGSR’s website.
Playing at STUBBS WALLER CREEK AMPHITHEATER:
2nd-Big Head Todd & the Monsters
13th- Frank Turner & the Sleeping Souls
16th- Shakey Graves
If you haven’t heard of Jaimee Harris, you need to check her out. She’s an amazing singer-songwriter in Austin, and she’ll be playing at Antone’s on the 14th, with another one of my favorites, Western Youth. At the Austin360 Amphitheater on the 9th is Ray LaMontagne with Neko Case. That will be an amazing show. Love, love, love them both. And then on the 30th is Weezer and The Pixies.
June’s Festival of the Month is one of my favorites, The Keep Austin Weird Fest & 5K on June 23rd. They changed the name to the Fun Stop 5K. It’s also the slowest 5K you will ever walk or run. Along the 5K route, they have 15 stops along the way including shots of Tito’s vodka wine shots, & a puppy kissing booth. There’s also doughnuts, Amy’s Ice Cream shots, and Clif Bar will have a Slip ‘N Slide. It’s a fabulously fun festival that starts at 4:00 PM on June 23rd. The 5K starts at 6:00 PM. For more information, you can go to funstop5k.com.
Fitness. Anything that revolves around the State Capitol is a favorite of mine. I love the Texas State Capitol. I love running around the State Capitol. The lawn is huge, so there are so many things to do. It usually draws a pretty big crowd, so on the 16th, the International Day of Yoga, there will be a 90-minute yoga session open to the public. They just ask that you wear white, bring your own yoga mat, water, and a towel. You can register online beforehand. It’s at night too, so it’s a little cooler because June is unseasonably warm this year, so…
Another thing that I love to do every Saturday morning, under the 1st Street Bridge at Town Lake, or Lady Bird Lake, whatever you want to call it, I run with my group, Ship of Fools. We have all pace groups from 8-11 minute miles. There are, depending on the time of year, lots of runners that show up & it’s a lot of fun. There are always different mileage options, anywhere from four, seven, or 10 mile runs. Once we get into marathon training season, our mileage increases. I’m running the Marine Corps Marathon this year, and I will be training with the Ship of Fools every Saturday at 7:00 AM, under the 1st Street Bridge. Everyone’s welcome!
Food. Every month, I like to highlight one of my favorite restaurants in Austin, and the only stipulation for me is that it has to be local. Not that there’s anything wrong with a chain, but we have so many amazing restaurants in Austin, Texas that if you live here, or if you’re coming in for the weekend, or if you’re here on business, please check out one of our amazing local restaurants.
One of my favorites is Wholly Cow Burgers. They are located at 3010 S Lamar. It’s a little hole in a wall, in a very unassuming strip mall, and the food is fantastic. The fries are hand-cut. They serve grass-fed beef from Fredericksburg, locally sourced, and it is to die for. I don’t eat a lot of meat, so I usually go with their Greener Pastures, which is a variety of grilled vegetables. Instead of a bun, you can opt for portabella mushroom caps called the Bella Bella Bella. Fabulous food, great price point, amazing atmosphere, and I believe it’s also BYOB but they do have beer on tap.
Those are just a few of the samplings of the fabulous things to do in Austin in June. Please reach out if you have any questions. Check out my YouTube channel for next month’s edition of Things to Do in Austin.
